OBJECTIVES
The AMH´s research is focused in understanding the current architectural space built and its connection with the new processes and new ways of design, build and inhabit.
The innovation applied to architecture or developed for architecture in contemporary times is the main theme of the Group. Thus, Architecture and Modes of Inhabiting works in processes and methodologies to create and design architectural space based on new methodologies of simulation, representation and evaluation supported on digital processes and the execution of the project for the building construction or the architectural space wider.
The development of the BIM methodology implementation applied to the architecture project and its implementation in the current global context of the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry is one of the subjects that AMH wants to develop. For this purpose, it seeks to intersect the innovation in architect’s working methods with innovation applied to new materials, different processes and building systems, connecting sustainability vision, eco-efficiency, life cycle analysis, embodied energy in the materials and energy aspects in the construction, maintenance and use of buildings and architectural spaces where the human being live and is the Architecture protagonist.
The center's works relies on three main research lines:
Modes of Inhabitation
This research line has was working topics: space use and occupation; emptiness, utensils and furniture design; applied to people and different ages in buildings and spaces such as the school environment, the hospital space, the interaction space and landscape.
Design Methods
A research line focused on the knowledge and development processes about design methods; the different design methodologies; the different requirements and results; the digital design; BIM (Building Information Modelling).
Building Methods
It is a line of research directed to the materials that build architecture, the different construction processes and building systems, technology applied to earth; cork, wood; researching different energy demands applied to exterior walls; studying new materials, and the application of digital systems and building data.
The AMH researchers come from different academic and professional backgrounds and several architectural fields of research, working in the various lines of research.

Atlas da Casa - Housing architectural design and forms of dwelling AdC

Arquitectura; Habitação; Cultura Material | Architecture; Housing; Culture Studies
OBJECTIVES
a) Mapa da Habitação;
b) Narrativas do projecto educativo em Arquitectura;
c) Identidade e Transferência;
Such as the Atlas of Mercator in the sixteenth century, the purpose of this research project is to transform an invisible reality in to visible.
The house and the house-project (expressions used here in its wider architectural, cultural and political meaning), determine extensively the domestic space. They refer to a large set of phenomena for whose understanding multiple inter-linking agents are required, in areas as diverse as architecture, history, social sciences, geography, engineering materials and technology industry.
In fact, the wide dimension of the matter, which, as a coherent structure, largely escaped traditional single sector analysis produced on the subject. Failing to include a reading of both individual and global phenomena, abandoning any sense of universality of knowledge and leading to significant confusion, which marked many twentieth century studies.
Clear examples are the post-war rebuilding of cities and the urban sprawl in the second half of the twentieth century, with problematic results on the ecological structure, the widespread adoption of housing types today threatened with radical demolition, together with the production of standards on housing unable to consider different ways of life and new technologies available, or the inadequate use of resources and technology.
The tradition of studies on the dwelling, in general supported by the need for deepening vertical knowledge, drastically ignored its context. This led, in all fields of knowledge, to the hasty rejection of the importance of many phenomena discarded as less attractive and visible, characterized as banal and anonymous, or not immediately related to the production of the house, although generally extensive and significant, which could
have unveiled important but grossly devalued facts and concepts.
More than just replace or upgrade a confused and scattered knowledge, it becomes important to introduce a different approach to the studies of the house, the living and the housing, aiming, with a different approach, a new characterization of a common object, deeply inserted in a grid of rich concepts and structures, that should define and guide the research.
To ensure this goal, the House Atlas, as a group of innovative and interdisciplinary research, will start with the house history and genealogy in the belief that it's an indispensable tool for basic knowledge about the home and dwell, to interpret the changes of the twentieth century and mapify the trends of the present.
Atlas da Casa has four projects leading to a wide comprehension of the contexts, the concepts and the forms of single and multi family housing architecture.
Mapping Public Housing in Portugal
It is intended to promote the development of studies on architectural housing design in the portuguese XXth century.
The out coming overall view from sequential projects will be enriched by the particular vision of each work, through a phenomenological and conceptual approach that guides the research.
Between times and variations: critical approach to the 19th and 20 th centuries architecture
This research is mainly of an essaying nature, whose purposes are to question and debate architects and their works in order to develop innovative readings of the modern culture that over crosses from the XIX and XX centuries. This research intends to question concrete architectural realizations providing not a single interpretation but the possibility of new ones.
Identity and Transference
The Identity and transfer research project is divided in three areas, which integrate research sponsored by consolidated personal sensitivities based on previous studies devoted to issues related to the conditions of living in the twentieth century. The three domains are "Erudito e Popular", which studies the single-family homes of Portuguese immigrants in Brazil, the work of "Rebelo de Andrade Brothers", who investigates Rebelo de Andrade´s architectural production between the thirties and sixties, and finally the "Portuguese architectural design processes produced between the forties and the sixties of the twentieth century", considered a experimental period in the panorama of modern Portuguese architecture.
Forms of housing and public facilities in the forms of public space
The main subject of this project is the Architecture of the public space, with its autonomous and formal identity where the forms of housing and public facilities take place. It searches and develops indicators of its visibility through scientific and artistic production in order to clarify concepts, values and technical reasons in the domain of architecture. Among the expected results stands the definition of an Architectural Design Laboratory of the U.Porto.

OBJECTIVES
Inclui o programa de investigação de pós-Doutoramento “Form and meaning in context: Portuguese architecture, 1481-1580”.
a) Organização do território, formas de urbanidade, marcas e medida do habitat/ paisagem construída e princípios de desenho da cidade (Portugal e antigos domínios portugueses no mundo);
b) O papel das formas construídas como modelos - desenho arquitectónico, proporção, módulos, construção (sécs. IX-XVII);
c) Formas do Renascimento em Portugal, tradição, relações com Itália, França e Norte da Europa;
XV a XX).
a) As operações SAAL e (os lugares d)a cidade – por uma compreensão mais ampla das suas relações com a periferia e o território; o projecto SAAL/Norte – estabelecimento de uma colecção de documentos relevantes, de modo a preservar a sua inteligibilidade, organizar o seu uso público, promover a disseminação de estudos académicos e informar intervenções contemporâneas na cidade e habitação;

The Architecture: Theory, Project and History group (ATPH) was formed in 2008, within a reorganization of CEAU. The group developed under the belief that the complementarity of theory, project and history allows the construction of an informed point of view about architecture, and intends to build a patient and open investigation that, although begins in one of the 3 mentioned topics, always presupposes the other 2, as a reflex or an unfolding of the transversal problems that connect them. It is the versatile unity of architectural knowledge through time that we propose to study.
The group shares a common aim to research in order to seek an innovative transformation of the built world, and to qualify the process of formation in architecture valuing all the steps, from the broad-based MSc, to PhD and post-doc studies. The research encompasses a reflection on the experience of teaching in Architecture and the paths of investigation in the disciplinary field.
Architecture and Mathematics
The team focused on the relationships between architecture and mathematics, with the underlying question of representation, that is present at all levels of design, from function to the final configuration of space. The main areas of study were related to: symmetry and proportion in Roman architecture, perspective and architecture in the baroque, developments of descriptive geometry in Portugal in the 19th century, music and architecture in the contemporary age and drawing.
Architecture and Cinema
Architecture and Cinema Research Line systematized affinities between architecture and cinema based on a theoretical research component, centered on papers, lectures and dissertations, as well as on the organization of events like Summer Courses, Workshops and an International Conference, significantly contributing to the area of critical studies on architecture and film; it also developed a practical or experimental research component, seeking for innovative reflections on the form of short-films on architecture.
Vitruviana
The research of this line is focused in the role of architecture theory in the development of built forms and architectural criticism, before 1800. It includes the post-doctoral research program “Form and meaning in context: Portuguese architecture, 1481-1580”.

The general objective of AAI is to articulate the mobilizing potential of Architecture, Art and Image to, among other things, (re)think how the world of Image and the various tools of representation, with special incidence on Contemporary Photography, extend a practice of architecture or theory as instruments of thought and imagination, as well as allow another reading of the city space and its architecture allowing to identify and give visibility to new spaces of political action and urban intervention.
Thus, the research areas of interest to the group are, in general terms, those of Architecture, Art, and Image and, in specific terms, those of Documentary and Artistic Photography related to Architecture, City and Territory. In this context, AAI promotes initiatives of research, communication and critical reflection in which Image is present in a significant way, integrating design, photography and other expressions and instruments capable of assisting architectural thought, practices, theory and imagination. AAI is specifically interested in developing and disseminating works that reflect and investigate through photography - in a critical, exploratory and innovative way - the themes of architecture, city and territory, having a comprehensive understanding of architecture as a discipline capable of integrating social, economic, political and technical dimensions reflected in its practices and theoretical body.
The mission of the research group is to create a collaborative network environment using a participatory platform (AAi2 Lab) capable of supporting various research and studies containing various types of information that enables communicating various content related to Art, Architecture, Urban Planning and the way people live, understand and transform their city, connecting various departments and university research centers with public institutions and the public in general.
In this line of thought, we understand the AAi2 Lab as an extension of the group itself, i.e., a more experimental extension, for that very reason laboratory and inspired in broad conceptions of creativity and innovation as driving forces of processes of social and institutional co-evolution. AAI2Lab, in close articulation with the curricular units of FACT and CAAD, intends to offer to the students of MIARQ (and also of PDA) a significant starting point regarding paradigms and methods of investigation, through the realization of workshops, debates, conferences and other actions of knowledge sharing, that stimulate the dialogue of students and researchers with other professionals, of diverse institutions/organizations and disciplinary fields, articulating the academic formation, the professional practice and the scientific investigation.
AAI is, in this context, an open research group, with an extension AAi2 Lab, and capable of integrating several studies and works through its different sites and platforms, and which aims to gain the interest and collaboration of different people and research, from various institutions and fields of study where are located several projects as well as various actions related to them and often establishing a bridge with teaching: Master Classes, Workshops, Conferences, Debates, Open Classes with guest teachers from other disciplinary areas of the U. Porto and outside the academy, Exhibitions, development of the scopio Editions with various publications and scientific articles, among others.

OBJECTIVES
A investigação desenvolvida no DFL engloba duas áreas complementares:
a) Design e Inovação Material: estudando novas possibilidades de design e de materiais, além de repensar as tradicionais;
a) Desenho Computacional - desenho paramétrico e algorítmico + pensamento de design computacional;
b) Fabricação Digital - aditivo, fabricação subtractiva e formativa + robótica.
O DFL tem, ainda, como missão:
- Fornecer estratégias digitais para responder à complexidade material e de design e à variabilidade, personalização, eficiência e sustentabilidade;

The research area of Digital Fabrication Laboratory (DFL) is the use of design and digital manufacturing technologies in the project and construction fields.
This objective is due to the fact that these technologies are dramatically expanding the geometric possibilities of the project, enabling the exploitation of non-standard production methods.
This digital condition affects the architecture practice from the scale of the building component to the global building shape. With this digital condition new opportunities are created to respond to the today's society interests, to the sustainability material challenges and to the requirements of the building performance efficiency.
The DFL’s Research Agenda encompasses two complementary avenues:
a) Design and Material Innovation: investigating new design and material possibilities and rethinking traditional ones;
b) Fabrication Technology Innovation: devising new fabrication methods, techniques, devices and machines.
In doing so, the DFL’s Competences are focused in:
a) Computational Design – parametric and algorithmic design + computational design thinking;
b) Digital Fabrication – additive, subtractive and formative fabrication + robotics.
In this scope, the DFL’s Mission is committed with:
- Delivery digital strategies to embrace design and material complexity, variability, customization, efficiency and sustainability;
- Investing in the evolution of the DFL internal know-how, skills and facilities;

OBJECTIVES
The Territory Dynamics and Morphologies group (MDT) continues the research, led by its main researchers since the 1980's, devoted to the recognition and understanding of the materials, processes and dynamics of the contemporary extensive urbanization.
Since then, these researchers have positioned themselves on the forefront of the international research in the search for new ways of understanding urban facts, trying to overcome the blockage resulting from the inability of canonical urban design models to address the new urban contexts.
The group stands for the necessity to look at the urbanized territory as a whole, overpassing the traditional dichotomy urban/rural, and understanding its logics, dynamics, processes and actors. Urban facts are always understood as a result of social organization, which leads to the inclusion of different scientific fields (architecture, urban design, urbanism, landscape architecture, geography, traffic engineering, economy, sociology, law) creating a real and sustained transdisciplinary research practice, often involving the contribution of external national and international researchers.
Following the acknowledgement and understanding of the extensive urbanization phenomenon, the group has dedicated itself to a more detailed analysis of the different elements and processes that compose it, searching for more operative conclusions.
The objectives and scope of research focus on processes and forms of extensive urbanization, clearly favoring the most recent and highly contracting realities of the new geographies created by the "urban explosion" of the last 50 years, understood as a reflection of the mutations carried out in the socioeconomic context, which have been translated into complex patterns.
Recently, the research has also focused on the search for new ways of reading these territories, in order to give it intelligibility capable to create more efficient mechanisms of appropriation and intervention.
The territory is a shared resource and a collective construction and to understand these dynamics and the urban planning in its management is more than just to identify the pertinence of a scientific subject but, mainly, to recognize the need of dissemination and discussion of these themes with the civil society.
Aware for this, the MDT group has been developing actions in order to foment the global transfer of knowledge, seeking to work together with the main actors of transformation of the territory, encouraging the discussion in the civil society about shared spaces and resources.

OBJECTIVES
Centra-se na abordagem tecnológica e construtiva ao património edificado em perspectivas inter-relacionadas (da história da construção aos processos de reabilitação e manutenção);
The Architecture, City and Territory Heritage Group (PACT) develops research within the vast area of Built Heritage, from classical antiquity to contemporary, in different scales and approaches: the history of construction and constructive characterization of buildings, typification of current anomalies, rehabilitation projects in specific architectonic works, analysis and definition of intervention methodologies in historical centers, expanding urban areas of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and territorial and landscape units of patrimonial value.
Furthermore, the field of study also encompasses the domain of interpretation and architectural intervention in areas and archaeological sites, as well as the analysis of interventions in the architectural patrimony of the 20th century.
The main geographical area of study is that of the national territory. However, bearing in mind valuable existing exchanges, influences or parallels with European, Brazilian and Latin American cities and universities, the work group considers it to be worthwhile to extend the scope of its research field.
The different topics described above are organized in three main lines of research:
a) Studies on City and Territorial Heritage;
Has the Oporto city as its starting point to understand the urban and landscape transformation processes in other Iberian and European cities.
b) Architectural Rehabilitation Actions in Built Heritage;
It’s focuses on the technological and constructive approach to the heritage built in interrelated perspectives (from the construction history to the rehabilitation and maintenance processes);
c) Atlas of Ways and Ancient Towns of Portugal.
Studies the relationship between architecture and archeology, from Roman times to contemporary times.

Teoria e Práticas de Projecto T2P
coordinator José Miguel Neto Viana Brás RODRIGUES
OBJECTIVES
a.) teoria no singular para declarar a importância que reconhece ao mundo das ideias que percorrem o tempo e o espaço da História e que configurariam, idealmente, um corpus unitário da disciplina no qual as contradições e dissensões existem mas ficam suavizadas;
The T2P research group carries out research in the area of the relationship between theory and the practice of design in the field of Architecture. The group’s object of study does not have a rigid geographic delimitation, but it will privilege research in the area of so-called Portuguese Architecture (in Portugal and around the world), without excluding foreign architecture and architects with architectural affinities with our particular design methods. Furthermore, the object of study does not have a rigid chronological delimitation but will always privilege Contemporary Architecture (in the sense of what is done today and now) or, in the case of studies on architectural practices of the past, in their (historical) relation to the architecture of today. The methods adopted by the group will be neither exclusively scientific nor exclusively empirical. The group will always privilege the importance of empirical data but will also seek plausible explanations for the researched architectural styles that ultimately allow for a better understanding of these, extracting from them teachings for future architectural practices. The research methods adopted by the group will place great importance on drafting, on its virtues and its problems, that is, on the ability of drafting to bring visibility to the problems upon which architecture is moved and built. When not explicitly present, the research modalities of the group will always privilege its methodological characteristics: intuition, redesign, recognition of morphology, its strategic dimension, proportion and scale, demonstration of an idea, the trial-and-error method, the overlapping of possible solutions to the same problem, etc., etc.
The group has chosen to call itself “Theory and Design Practices” for the following reasons:
a.) theory, singular, to declare the importance given to the world of ideas that traverse the time and space of history and that would, ideally, form a unitary corpus of the discipline, in which contradictions and dissent exist but are softened;
b.) design practices, plural, to represent the plurality of hypotheses and directions that the craft of architecture does not and could never impede, which the group intends to cultivate as an openness to the world (of men and ideas), but refuses as common-place that today anything is possible and valid in a kind of pluralism without a name or ideas that this collective, currently being formed, recognizes, but does not see as reflective of itself.
Furthermore, the group believes in the modern project as the last link of architecture as a craft with day-to-day life, in a perspective that is progressive but not blind to history. The group sees itself reflected in and wishes to continue the legacy of the masters of the modern movement, in the pre- and post-war era, which is why it continues its research into the modern.
