Agregado em Arquitectura pela Universidade do Porto (2014), Doutor em Engenharia Civil pela Universidade do Porto (1991), Mestre em Engenharia Estrutural pela Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (1985) e Licenciado em Engenharia Civil pela Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (1977).
Docente da FAUP desde 1986. Entre 1978 e 1986, foi docente da 2.ª Secção (Arquitectura) da Escola Superior de Belas-Artes do Porto. A sua actividade docente estendeu-se ainda a outras Instituições do Ensino Superior Público, designadamente, Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho e Escola de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, através de colaborações pontuais, maioritariamente no âmbito de cursos de nível pós-graduado.
Presentemente, é vice-presidente do Conselho de Representantes e vogal do Conselho Científico da FAUP, exercendo ainda, na mesma instituição, as funções de director do Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura e Urbanismo e, no plano académico, de director do curso de estudos avançados em Património Arquitectónico (3.º ciclo de estudos).
A actividade de investigação desenvolvida integrou-se, numa fase inicial, no domínio da Mecânica Computacional e, mais especificamente, no estudo e desenvolvimento de modelos numéricos direccionados para a análise não-linear de estruturas de betão.
Actualmente, os interesses de investigação inscrevem-se, fundamentalmente, na área da Conservação e Reabilitação de Edifícios Antigos, incidindo, em particular, no estudo do sistema construtivo e estrutural da casa burguesa do Porto, de entre os séculos XVII e XIX, visando o estabelecimento de metodologias de intervenção direccionadas para a sua reabilitação, bem como em temas que se inscrevem no domínio da História da Construção.

Faculty member of FAUP since 1986. Between 1978 and 1986, was assistant professor at the School of Fine Arts of Porto (Architecture department). His teaching activity has also been extended to other Public Institutions of Higher Education, namely, Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, School of Engineering of the University of Minho and School of Science and Technology of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, through specific collaborations, mainly in the context of postgraduate courses.
Presently, it is vice-chairman of the Representatives Council and member of the Scientific Board of FAUP, exercising also, at the same institution, the functions of director of the Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism and, in the academic plan, of director of the Architectural Heritage advanced studies course (third cycle of studies).
The research activity developed, at an early stage, was focused in the field of Computational Mechanics and, more specifically, in the study and development of numerical models for the nonlinear analysis of concrete structures.
Currently, the research interests fall, mainly, in the area of Conservation and Rehabilitation of Ancient Buildings, focusing, in particular, on the study of the structural and building system of Porto houses, built up between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, aiming the establishment of intervention methodologies for their rehabilitation, as well as in themes that are enrolled in the field of History of Construction.
